Comhaltas Craobh Boirche have teamed up with Moneydarragh Hub!

The charities will put on a number of free folk music and trad lessons for people with additional needs and disabilities.

The free lessons, which are made possible with kind grant support from the Public Health Agency through the Clear Project teach tin whistle at Moneydarragh Hub on Tuesdays at 6pm from the 10th of January and are available for all ages to join.

The workshops will run until the 28th of March and provide the opportunity for developing confidence and a new skill with Access NI certified tutors.

The charities will also be providing more free workshops to schoolchildren with additional needs or disabilities on Fridays in St. Colman’s Primary School and St. Louis Grammar School for tin whistle and guitar*.

Regarding the collaboration, chairperson of Moneydarragh Hub Margaret Rogers said ”Music is food for the soul; it is one of a wide range of creative and expressive studies that are so valuable in enriching all our lives. It is very important that everyone has access to the creative arts, so this initiative is helping provide equality for all. We are endeavouring to remove barriers of access so people can enjoy music. We at Moneydarragh Hub hope as many people as possible can benefit from the programme and take full advantage of this lovely opportunity.”

Comhaltas Craobh Boirche also deliver a variety of subsidised paid classes in traditional folk instruments at Moneydarragh Hub, including lessons in guitar, whistle, bodhrán, harp, fiddle, and accordion.

Speaking on the lessons, chairperson of Comhaltas Craobh Boirche, Hugh Cox, had this to say: “There are 46 branches of Comhaltas throughout Northern Ireland and all are happy to cater for people of all ages and abilities. We are pleased to be able to offer these classes and are fortunate to have experienced tutors to provide. Children with additional needs or disabilities gain tremendous benefits both socially and emotionally from being able to play an instrument – even if they only learn a few tunes. We would particularly like to thank our sponsors the PHA through the Clear Project – without this support we could not provide these classes. We hope to obtain funding to deliver these classes to more venues in the near future.”

In addition to the collaboration with Comhaltas Craobh Boirche, Moneydarragh Hub are pleased to offer Arts activities for young people which focus on well-being through art and outdoors on Thursdays evenings and Saturday mornings with dates TBC. Adults can also avail of creative opportunities on Thursdays from 1–3pm.
